Can AI Plan Your Vacation? Here's What It Does Well (And Where It Falls Short)
Over the last couple of years, I've had more and more travelers tell me they're using AI tools to plan their vacations. They'll ask for restaurant recommendations in Rome, a family-friendly itinerary for Alaska, or even a complete two-week European itinerary.
And honestly? AI can be pretty impressive.
As a travel advisor, I use AI myself. It's a fantastic tool for brainstorming, organizing information, and generating ideas.
But there's a big difference between gathering information and planning a successful trip.
So, can AI plan your vacation? Yes... to a point.
Let's talk about what it does well and where it falls short.
What AI Does Well
Generating Ideas
Not sure where you want to go?
AI can be a great starting point. It can suggest destinations based on your interests, whether that's hiking, history, beaches, wildlife, food, or adventure.
It can also help answer questions like:
Which Greek islands are best for families?
What are some alternatives to Paris?
Where can I see wildlife in Alaska?
What European destinations are good for first-time visitors?
For inspiration, AI is incredibly useful.
Building Sample Itineraries
If you ask AI to create a seven-day itinerary for Italy, you'll likely get something that looks reasonable.
It can provide a framework and help you understand how much you might be able to fit into a trip.
For travelers in the early dreaming stage, this can be helpful.
Answering General Travel Questions
AI is great for quick questions such as:
What documents do I need?
What currency is used?
How long is the flight?
What is the weather like?
It can often provide quick answers without hours of research.
Where AI Falls Short
It Doesn't Know What's Actually Available
This is one of the biggest limitations.
AI can suggest a charming hotel, a specific tour, or a cruise itinerary. But it doesn't necessarily know whether that option is sold out, discontinued, undergoing renovations, or no longer operating.
A trip that looks perfect on paper may not be possible in reality.
It Doesn't Know Your Priorities
One family may love a packed itinerary with museums and guided tours.
Another may want plenty of downtime, pools, and leisurely mornings.
Two people can visit the exact same destination and need completely different vacations.
AI can only work with the information it's given. A travel advisor can ask questions, listen, and often uncover needs travelers didn't even realize they had.
It Doesn't Know the Small Details
Many travel decisions come down to details that don't show up in a search result.
Things like:
Which side of the ship has the best views?
Which neighborhoods are convenient for walking?
Which hotels are worth the extra money?
Which excursions consistently receive positive feedback?
Which airport connection is risky?
These details often come from experience, industry relationships, and years of helping travelers navigate real-world situations.
It Doesn't Handle Problems
This is where the biggest difference often appears.
When flights get canceled, weather changes plans, a hotel overbooks, or something unexpected happens, AI cannot make phone calls, advocate on your behalf, or help find solutions.
Travel is wonderful, but it's not always predictable.
Having a knowledgeable human in your corner can make a stressful situation much easier to manage.
The Best Approach? Use Both
I don't think AI and travel advisors are competing with each other.
I think they work best together.
Use AI to dream.
Use it to gather ideas.
Use it to learn about destinations.
Then work with a travel professional to refine those ideas, customize them to your travel style, verify the details, and help bring the trip to life.
Final Thoughts
Travel is about more than booking flights and hotels.
It's about creating experiences, memories, and moments you'll remember for years.
Technology can help inspire those adventures. But when it comes to turning ideas into a seamless, personalized trip, there is still tremendous value in human expertise.
The goal isn't choosing between AI and a travel advisor.
It's using the right tool for the right job.
And sometimes, the best travel plans come from combining both.
