Whether you're driving along the scenic Seward Highway or hiking through Denali National Park, you'll be surrounded by beauty at every turn.Wildlife Encounters
Alaska offers some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the world. Bears, moose, bald eagles, wolves, and sea otters are just a few of the animals you can encounter in their natural habitat. Wildlife lovers will find plenty to see, whether you’re on a wildlife cruise, a guided tour, or just exploring on your own (but be careful, because…bears and moose!)Adventure for All Levels
Whether you’re looking for high-adrenaline thrills or a more relaxed outdoor experience, Alaska delivers. You can hike glaciers, go dog sledding, kayak through icy waters, or take a scenic flight over Mount Denali. For those seeking a slower pace, fishing, bear watching, or even taking a relaxing river cruise offer unforgettable experiences.Northern Lights
The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, is one of nature's most spectacular displays. During the winter months, visitors to Alaska can witness the sky come alive with vibrant colors in shades of green, purple, and pink. This magical experience is a bucket-list item for many travelers.Rich Indigenous Culture
Alaska is home to a variety of indigenous cultures with deep roots in the land. Visitors can learn about the traditions, art, and history of Alaska Native tribes through museums, cultural centers, and authentic experiences. Discovering the stories of the Alutiiq, Iñupiat, Tlingit, and other native peoples adds a profound layer to your visit.
Personal Experience: Northern Lights
I had the incredible opportunity to witness the Northern Lights in Alaska, and it was truly a feeling like no other. Watching the sky dance in such beautiful colors was absolutely mesmerizing. Knowing how rare this phenomenon is and how few people have seen it only made the experience even more special.
Personal Experience: Wildlife Encounters
I had the privilege of exploring Denali National Park, including seeing a wolf in the wild—something that’s incredibly rare and special, especially as I’m obsessed with wolves. Taking a plane ride over the park was another highlight, offering an awe-inspiring view of the vast wilderness below.
Top 5 Must-See Sites in Alaska
Denali National Park
No trip to Alaska is complete without visiting Denali National Park, home to North America’s tallest peak, Mount Denali. The park offers opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and even climbing the peak (for the most experienced). Take a bus tour through the park for a chance to spot bears, moose, and caribou, and enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains and glaciers.Glacier Bay National Park
Glacier Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see for anyone interested in Alaska’s incredible glaciers. Visitors can take a boat tour through the park, marveling at massive ice sheets, calving glaciers, and the surrounding mountainous terrain. It’s also a great place for whale watching, as humpback whales often frequent the area.Kenai Fjords National Park
Located near the town of Seward, Kenai Fjords National Park is famous for its spectacular coastal scenery and wildlife. The park is home to dramatic fjords, tidewater glaciers, and abundant wildlife, including sea otters, seals, and puffins. A boat tour is the best way to explore the area, with opportunities for glacier hikes and kayak trips as well.Seward Highway
The Seward Highway is one of Alaska’s most scenic drives, offering panoramic views of rugged coastlines, snow-capped mountains, and pristine lakes. Along the way, you'll pass by wildlife hotspots and charming towns. The drive is especially stunning in the fall when the foliage is at its peak, but it's beautiful year-round. The highway is only open from June through September generally because of the extensive snow during winter, though! The Inside Passage
The Inside Passage is a scenic water route that runs along the southeastern coast of Alaska, known for its crystal-clear waters, lush rainforests, and remote islands. Visitors can explore the area by cruise, boat, or kayak, and there are numerous stops where you can experience small coastal towns, whale watching, and abundant wildlife. This is also one of the best places to view the Northern Lights during the winter months.
Personal Experience: Glacier Bay and Kenai Fjords National Parks
I was fortunate enough to see glaciers calving up close and even had the opportunity to kayak around icebergs and hike on a glacier. It was an unforgettable adventure that really brought me closer to Alaska’s stunning natural beauty.
Personal Experience: Rich Local Culture
During my time in Alaska, I went deep-sea fishing, enjoyed fresh king crab, and had the chance to experience local festivals and culture. Whether it was participating in the Iditarod or meeting the mushers behind the scenes, the authentic experiences were unforgettable. I even participated in the Iditarod on the veterinary team as a technician, and it was amazing to see the pre-race, official start, and restart. Experiencing the race from behind the scenes was a unique opportunity I’ll never forget.
